Spravato is a prescription esketamine nasal spray. For adults with treatment-resistant depression, it is FDA-approved with or without an oral antidepressant. TMS of Austin offers consultations to review prior treatment and whether supervised Spravato care may be appropriate.
When contacting us, tell us which service you’re interested in and your preferred day and time. Our team will review your request and contact you to confirm the next step. Submitting a request does not book an appointment.
A consultation comes before treatment
Bring previous medication names, doses if available, how long you took them, and what helped or caused problems. Your clinician must review medical history, current medicines, blood pressure, substance-use history, and other safety considerations. Certain blood-vessel conditions, a history of bleeding in the brain, or allergy to esketamine or ketamine can make treatment unsuitable.
What happens at a treatment visit?
Spravato is administered under healthcare supervision through a restricted REMS safety program. You use the nasal spray in the clinic and are monitored for at least two hours afterward. Monitoring includes blood pressure and breathing. You cannot take Spravato home for unsupervised use.
Arrange transportation home. Do not drive or operate machinery until the next day after a restful sleep. Before treatment, ask the team about food, drinks, other nasal medicines, and your usual medications. Confirm arrival time and the total time to reserve, including check-in and observation.
Benefits and important limitations
The aim is improvement in depressive symptoms; response varies. Risks include sedation, dissociation, respiratory depression, increased blood pressure, and abuse or misuse. Ask how progress and side effects will be assessed throughout your course.
Spravato also has a separate indication, with an oral antidepressant, for depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder and acute suicidal thoughts or behavior. It has not been shown to prevent suicide or reduce suicidal thoughts or behavior. Immediate danger requires emergency care, not an online appointment request.
Understand the schedule and cost before starting
The number and spacing of visits depend on the treatment plan and response. Ask for the proposed initial schedule, how continuation decisions are made, and whether your preferred office provides the treatment.
Costs may include the medication, supervised treatment visits, and evaluation. Medical and pharmacy benefits can differ. Ask which benefits apply, whether authorization is needed, and what your deductible, copay, or coinsurance means for each visit. A consultation does not guarantee insurance coverage.
Spravato questions
Can I drive myself home?
No. Plan a ride home after every treatment. Driving must wait until the next day after restful sleep.
Is Spravato the same as ketamine infusion?
No. Spravato is esketamine given as a nasal spray with its own FDA-approved indications and safety program. It is not an intravenous ketamine infusion.
How do I decide between Spravato and Deep TMS?
Start with a review of diagnosis, treatment history, safety, goals, and the time each option requires. These are different treatments; neither is automatically right for everyone.
